Day 2, 12 Nov 2016
So our itinerary for day 2 is to visit the bamboo groves at Arashiyama and to get dressed in Kimono. It was indeed an extremely tiring experience to walk around in kimono x.x. But I would say I am glad we did it? It was quite a memorable experience though a tad too touristy? One should always aim to be a traveller not a tourist imo haha.

First thing first, breakfast! :> Had breakfast at Yoshinoya. Was deciding between Macs and Yoshinoya lolol and decided on Yoshinoya because there wasn't anything special at Macs for breakfast.

While there is Yoshinoya in Singapore, this tasted much better hahaha. Think everything in Japan just taste better. Well, imo, this is probably because how Japanese just take so much pride in everything they do. (Y)

After our breakfast, we headed to Yumeyakata Kimono Rental which was just a stone throw away. 
Spent quite a long time choosing a kimono, wearing the kimono (actually just stood there and get dressed), and doing my hair. Wearing the kimono was quite an awkward process I guess. One just stand there and wait to be served. Hmm this is how all the princesses get dressed in the past I presume? Haha.

I think the entire process took almost two hours (or was it longer) and it was time to begin our journey to Arashiyama. It was quite a long walk to the Togetsukyo Bridge and we had our photos taken by other tourists who thought we were headed to some party -.- 

After a long walk, we were greeted by this :)

There were several stalls selling food ranging from skewered meat to ice-cream. And in the end we got  dango cause it looks pretty. HAHA we finally see a real dango after looking at pictures/emoji.

Well, it wasn't amazing sadly. The green tea taste wasn't strong and it was a little gelat. :( 

After looking at the food and enjoying the view of the river, we went to look for %Arabica Coffee which was on my to-try list hehe.

There was a queue for this coffee x.x Sighhhh why am I forever queuing for food lol.

This coffee was pretty good (Y). But I like bitter coffee so this may not be what everyone likes. Initially I wanted to try their hot coffee but the weather was pretty warm. 20 degrees (or maybe even higher) and being in a kimono x.x. I was pretty sure I was sweating under the many layers of clothes.

Well Andss' logo has bamboo so yup my caption does make sense. It wasn't super amazing the bamboo forest? Like other tourist destinations (Fushimi Inari shrines etc), it was crowded and hence hard to take more pictures haha.

Then we decided to head back to the kimono rental place to change out of our kimono before exploring Nishiki Market :) So glad to change out of our kimono hahaha. Although the kimono looks really pretty, it was hard to walk in them. Climbing stairs in kimono is really a chore because one of the layer of clothing was tied around your legs so you couldn't have big movements. While it is unlikely that I will wear kimono again, I have to say it's a good experience.

We also tried the fishcake with carrot, pumpkin and sweet potato which was pretty yummy. Glad we had added Nishiki Market into our itinerary. It wasn't in our itinerary at first because we didn't have enough time in Kyoto and we wanted to try the burnt ramen instead... But in the end we decided to go with the market and I am glad we did because markets always provide a good insight into the locals' lives. Or maybe I am just happy because of all the fooooood.

Headed back to Kyoto station for dinner while we had takoyaki and a parfait from Tsujiri Tea House. 
Super miss the takoyaki from Gindaco at Ion Orchard. Why must all the food shops that I like get closed down in SG :( Gindaco, Happy Lemon... The parfait from Tsujiri wasn't very nice. Maybe it's because I don't like houjicha that much and whipped cream is just not my thing.

Tsujiri was located inside the departmental store and it was closed at 8pm! The entire departmental store also closes pretty early, surprisingly. So after having our parfait, we slowly made our way back to our Airbnb to rest in preparation for the next day- Nara Park and Osaka!

Day 0, 10 Nov 2016

The day that I have been waiting for had finally arrived!! Hahaha booked the air tickets since end 2015/start of 2016 so kiasu right. I had always wanted to visit Japan (for the food, cherry blossom and the food) so I was pretty excited about the trip.

The only sad thing is how the exchange rate wasn't that favourable. 1 SGD to 73/74 Yen vs 1 SGD to 90+ yen during 2015...

Took a night flight and SQ really fed us pretty well.

Both were just normal? My favourite part of the meal is their bread (LOL). I have always liked their bread.



Some online article said people who choose aisle seats are clearly more mature... Er, I love window seats. Looking at the clouds. the view from high above etc is so amazing?! Like we humans are so tiny compared to the universe. 

Or maybe I just value dreaming or sleeping according to this source.

Day 1, 11 Nov 2016
First thing we did in Japan? Other than clearing immigration etc, it's to collect the physical copy of our JR Pass. JR Pass wasn't very cheap but was worth it given how we needed to take shinkansen a couple of times. 

When we boarded the train at the airport, the station was enclosed so we had no idea how cold the weather is until we transferred trains. It was around 8 degrees which was VERY cold given how I was in t-shirt and a thin long sleeve shirt HAHA.

Took the shinkansen and arrived in Kyoto a couple of hours later. Well, the train lines are pretty confusing :S After struggling with the ticketing machine and all the staircases, we finally reached our Airbnb which was a loft. :O Okay lah, limited space in Japanese apartment but #whinyme likes to complain hahaha.

Sidenote, one point that I think Singapore fare better than Japan is the Barrier-Free Accessibility though some areas in SG may not be really barrier-free. In Japan, it's really very hard to locate the lifts and escalators.Witnessed a middle-aged woman with some injury struggling up the stairs :x

So we checked in our Airbnb which was located at Kyoto City Hall before we kick-started our travelling in Japan :) First stop, Fushimi Inari Shrine.

Didn't manage to do the hiking trail since my shoes weren't exactly non-slippery and we didn't reach the shrine that early. Took some photos and then walked around the streets where we bought our first takoyaki in Japan hehe. Even though it wasn't a famous stall, it tasted pretty good (Y). Not sure whether it's cause we were hungry (our last proper meal was breakfast on plane) or cause it was slightly cold so it was shiok to eat something warm... 

Then we made our way to our dinner place... Kichi Kichi! Added this to my to-try list ever since I see this on social media. The famous omu rice.

Yes, the omelette did flow. ^^ The egg was indeed one of the fluffiest, if not the fluffiest, I have ever eaten and the potato croquette was pretty good as well. The omu rice was around $30SGD which may seem expensive but the entire dining experience not only engage your taste and smell, but your sight as well. The chef really behaves like he is putting on a show and even poses for you. All the customers will be busy taking photos and videos of the entire process. 

So my verdict? I would think it is worth to visit this place once. FYI, there's only eight seats in the restaurant so a reservation (slots open 6 weeks in advance) is necessary!

Yup, so that was how the first day in Japan went. And Happy Boxing Day to anyone reading this (doubt anyone will see this).

We keep wasting colours

Badly want to write something but feeling so uninspired lately. Wonder if this is linked to work hmm. Not trying to say work sucks but maybe it's stifling whatever creativity I have.

Been reading Lang Leav's works again. Some of the proses/poems that I really like/agree with.





CONVERSATIONS

What a neglected space. To think that one of my new year resolutions is to write more haha. I can't deny the fact that I still enjoy writing, especially when it comes to writing about food. Perhaps I am afraid to find out how much I like writing. Because if I realise all I wanted to do in my career is to write, then it means I have made another mistake in my career choice.

Not saying I am unhappy at work. I am definitely happier than previously but I won't and can't say I am really satisfied. And I can't help but wonder what will happen if I choose the alternative. Will I be happy writing press releases? Scanning media every day. Perhaps editing and choosing photos to communicate news. Having to OT/work faster since speed is everything when it comes to media release.

This eight/nine months wasn't good at all. I wish I could say otherwise. I wish I could say it was a good learning experience. Perhaps the only one thing I have learnt is that you don't always get what you want/life is cruel. Or perhaps I should say that I have learnt that perseverance does pay off some day. 

For someone who always got what she wants, this was certainly the darkest period of my life albeit I wasn't that old to start with. 

Ah, social media. Probably shouldn't elaborate any further.



誰比誰好 能差到多少 
遲早都要 向上帝報到
既然壞的 通通改不掉 
用力思考 
保證 自找 煩惱

Another quarter of the year has passed.

How does it feel surviving seven months at a place where I am not learning?
Am I supposed to be proud of myself?
What have I done in these three months?
How have I improved myself?


Inspiration to do things comes from experiencing life. You just need to get out more and try new things, and you just might find something that will inspire you to do something.

The latter kind of waiting. Will it happen in 2016?

Achievements in 2015: Following fitness routines, graduating, learning how to plan my finances, understanding human nature/relationships, finding what I do NOT want in terms of a career...

Hmm, so here are some of my resolutions I guess:


  1. Getting into shape: eat more healthily, sign up for a pilates class/yoga class/ gym membership/ (once I get a new job with better working hours)
  2. Make (more) food haha (overnight oats?)
  3. Only keep friends who deserve to be kept: no point feeling upset and going the extra mile for people who can't be bothered and start making cards and time for people who matter.
  4. Stay updated with the world's happenings instead of spending so much time on social media.
  5. Compare less (in line with spending less time on social media)
  6. Be more proactive in job search: send at least three applications per week
  7. Continue reading.
  8. Save up more at least 50% every month: "Spend what's left after saving"
  9. Travel to at least one country (Japan/Australia) in 2016 (not contradictory to above point because travel experiences cannot be replaced with anything)
  10. Think of a business idea? Start writing?
