I want an ocean view, somewhere

Didn't want to let this blog die, but no inspiration to write haha. So thought of just sharing some of my current obsessions.

Current TV shows obsession:

1. We Bare Bears
Ice bear thinks you are precious,so don't ever think you are not. 💟

2. A Series of Unfortunate Events (Season 2)

Being a huge fan of this book series in upper primary/secondary school, this Netflix adaption didn't disappoint me. For those uninitiated, like what the title says, the three main characters faced many terrible situations. Currently finished 6 episodes from this season (there's only 10 episodes released for season 2) and let's just say I am likely to be watching it after I finish this post (HAHA).
Sidenote, IMO, episode 6 was heart-wrenching because the thought of them not meeting their friends ever again (if they follow the books closely, which I hope they do) 😭

Current songs obsession:

1. Back To You
Everybody knows we got unfinished business
And I'll regret it if I didn't say
This isn't what it could be (isn't what it could be)
You could break my heart in two
But when it heals, it beats for you
I know it's forward, but it's true

Haha, no prizes for guessing what would be the next show I will be watching on Netflix. Yup Thirteen Reasons Why Season 2, let's hope it won't disappoint me.

2. She Used To Be Mine
She's imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie

3. This Town

(which clearly inspired the title of this post)

Nothing ever changes here, I know
Another day, another year, same old
I don't wanna live my life in circles
I just wanna find an empty road
Let's get away from here, let's go

Current food obsession:
1. Poke Bowls
Tried this beautiful bowls of poke bowls (haha) thanks to a colleague's one-for-one offer on Entertainer. Well, you can say I am a fan of this now. What's there not to love? Vegetables, salmon/tuna pieces and rice (balanced meal yo).

Super ready to try other poke bowls (lemme know if you have any recommendations, wait does anyone read this space haha).

2. Ya Kun's Black Coffee
May your coffee be strong 💪

"Liking black coffee is a sign that you are a simple human being. You can appreciate life for its subtleties. Black coffee is a point of stability and simplicity amid a life of chaos and complexity. It’s the real deal. Did you know that coffee can be surprisingly sweet underneath its intensely bitter aroma? Did you even give it a chance?"

Hahaha, okay that's the end of this very random blog post. Time for my Netflix (and no chill).

Till the next time.

Let's get out of this town.

Unless you have been living under a rock in Singapore, all Singaporeans/all who reside in Singapore should have heard of McDonald's Nasi Lemak Burger, Chendol McFlurry and Bandung McFizz, which was sold out just in two weeks. Well, kudos to the Marketing team (I assume) for this brilliant marketing campaign, to launch localised products to celebrate special occasions (National Day in this case).

If you take a closer look, McDonald's wasn't the only fast food restaurant that launched national dishes related food. Look at Burger King's newer launch of Hainanese Chicken Rice and Rendang Burger, which are also inspired by Singaporeans' favourite dishes. Ahhh, indeed the power of marketing.

So, with a long list of national dishes (okay, our neighbours might dispute that they do it better haha), here's a list of possible localised fast food, in my opinion.

1. Pepper crab burger

A couple of cafes like Artistry, LePark in Singapore have already incorporated crab into their burgers. Chili crab burgers are so yesteryear,  so move over chili crabs and let's have pepper crab burgers instead😌

Image result for pepper crab
Black pepper crab > chili crab (hehe)
Source: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Black_pepper_crab,_New_Ubin_Seafood,_Singapore_-_20150424.jpg

While McDonald's had salt and pepper shaker fries previously, there is no one (at least based on my knowledge and Google) with pepper crab burgers.

Tadah, you can thank me for the idea later on.

2. Durian pie

Flavours like apple, taro, banana and even coconut are being offered. So when are we going to get pies of our all-time favourite fruit? Well, maybe one should also consider mangosteen drinks/soft-serve to complement durian pie cause what is the king without the queen.

3. Fries with fish/mutton curry sauce

If fish/mutton curry goes well with potatoes, there is no reason why fries won't go well with fish/mutton curry right? In fact, aren't people already requesting for curry sauce to go with their fries?

So yeah, this combination does sound workable and yummy (or at least it sounds yummy in my head).😋

4. Ice blended coffee with Bandung

While I am not a fan of Bandung, I am pretty sure there are many other Singaporeans who swear by this drink which is made from rose syrup with evaporated/condensed milk. If rose lattes/coffee can be popular and taste good, maybe the combination of Bandung and coffee might taste good as well? (Also read this if you are a fan of rose latte)

5. Bak Chor Mee burger

One of my favourite hawker dishes will have to be bak chor mee with a lot of vinegar, chili sauce and mushrooms. There are already a few places with bak chor mee inspired food e.g. Kerbside Gourmet but none of them (I think) are using mee pok/mee kia as the "bun" in the burger.

Instead of having fried ramen noodles as the "bun", why not use fried mee pok/mee kia?
Image result for ramen burger singapore
Source: http://www.destinasian.com/publications/singapore-serves-up-ramen-burgers

As for the patty, it should be made of minced meat marinated in vinegar and the chili sauce that accompanies our typical bak chor mee. Yum.

Yup, that's five possible food that could be incorporated into our fast food imo. While the localised fast food e.g. McDonald's Nasi Lemak Burger does taste not bad (my opinion again), nothing beats the real authentic local food. And I am pretty grateful for the wide assortment of food Singapore offers 😍😋

With that, happy birthday Singapore!💖

Red miso pork

Sometime ago, I had a task at Outram Park so I took the opportunity to have lunch at Chinatown Complex. This is from my favourite Japanese hawker stall, Kazan Japanese Food Cuisine. Somehow it doesn't taste as good anymore. Was it the dish I chose (the salmon was really good)? Or was it just because it's not my first choice?

Well, my first choice was actually the dry ban mian from the food centre. But when I reached there, the shutters were down and there was no signboard there any more. Did it never have a signboard? Or has it really closed down for good? Sigh, I think all the food places I like face the same fate :X

Although there is a "famous" dry ban mian near my workplace, I can't help but feel the one at Chinatown is so much better. Is this why people say "Only the things you no longer have will always be perfect."?

Yet you still value the things you've lost the most. Because the things you've lost are still perfect in your head. They never rusted. They never broke. They are made of the memories you once had, which only grow rosier and brighter, day by day. They are made of the dreams of how wonderful things could have been and must never suffer the indignity of actually still existing. Of being real. Of having flaws. Of breaking and deteriorating.

Only the things you no longer have will always be perfect.

Maybe subconsciously I have picked the second choice. Or maybe it's just growing out of it and realising it's not what I wanted. I just wish that it's not too late a realisation.

Ending off with my current earworm.

Hi there, I am here to blog about food after a while.

It's been a long time because I have no inspiration about what to write. Each time I type something, it just doesn't feel right. I used to type my food recommendation/thought posts here without putting too much thoughts into my words but these days, I am just full of doubts. Sighhh.

Here's my attempt to re-ignite my passion in writing and also to share some yummy Japanese food (my opinion may be different from yours) so you can save your tummy space for the best.

Oh random thought, if this is an email draft for work, here's the place to insert a line and start my draft proper #workissues #notexpectingyoutounderstand

Why Japanese food, you may wonder. Well, I love all things Japanese. Japan's culture, weather, transport and of course, their food. Sushi, tonkatsu, tendon, ramen, matcha desserts etc. When I am asked to choose/shortlist dining options, I think the probability of me suggesting Japanese cuisine is 60% HAHA. Ok, cut the story short, let's move on with the pictures and the list of food places 😋

Sumiya

For an amount of approximately $20, one could savour the salmon ikura don, chawanmushi, salad, pickles and mochi.

The salmon and the salmon roe were very fresh and sesame mochi was good as well (QQ, not too sweet). But bad news? This is no longer on their lunch set menu and without the lunch set promotion, this probably cost around $30-40 :'(

Genki Sushi
Sushi served to you in a train, how cute is it?

Won't say I have tried many sushi in SG but comparing this to Sushi Express? I would choose this any time. Genki's salmon sashimi just taste fresher (okay, Genki's a bit pricier than Sushi Express). and their grilled salmon sushi actually arrives to your table warm (!!) and you could actually taste the smokiness (haha I meant it in a good way). Other than the grilled salmon sushi, the oyakodon and the salmon/crabmeat triple flavour (plain, black pepper and mentaiko salmon/crameat) are pretty good as well!

Yup, so if I am in town and craving for affordable Japanese food, Genki Sushi is definitely on the top of my list.

Kazan Japanese Cuisine
Black salmon pepper rice from a stall at Chinatown Complex.

Yup, this definitely has to be the cheapest in my list of good Japanese food. The serving size of the salmon is decent (not too thin and there's two pieces) and this costs around $6 (from what I remember), which makes it very value for money! The salmon is very crispy (fried on the spot) and the owner is very polite.

The only bad thing about this place? Long queue during lunch time and this queue could be probably worse now given that EatBook (part of TheSmartLocal) featured them a couple of months ago here. Nonetheless, worth the hype 😋

The Standing Sushi Bar

Just realised I don't really have pictures of my food from this restaurant... is it because the food is so good that I don't have the patience to wait and snap pictures of my food? HAHA.

Standing Sushi Bar has three outlets (four if you count Tanuki Raw which is owned by them) and I have only been to the one near Singapore Art Museum. Their sashimi is one of the best (if not the best) I have ever eaten. Thick, fresh slices and the $3 for 5 pieces offer on Mon and Thurs makes this very worth it! Be sure to reserve your seats (think the one near Singapore Art Museum takes reservations) because they run promotions almost every day of the week e.g. 50% off rice bowls on Sundays, 50% off sushi rolls on Wednesday... Other than the sashimi, they have really good sushi rolls too. Would definitely want to head down on a Sunday to try their rice bowls 😍

Tonkotsu King Four Seasons Ramen
Winter ramen

As evident from the shop name, this shop which is located near Bugis Village offers different broths named after the seasons. I can only remember the summer ramen being spicy haha. Keisuke has a couple of outlets and I have tried their ramen from Tori King and Tonkotsu King at Tanjong Pagar and Keisuke Tokyo at Suntec City but I feel that the outlet at Bugis Village serves the best ramen! Meat is tender enough, soup is not too salty and the best part about Keisuke ramen outlets it that they have free flow bean sprouts and hard boiled eggs!

While there are many other Japanese food shops that I frequent and enjoy, I am trying to limit myself to 5 favourites (if not this post will be never ending). So, with that, have fun eating ;)

Okay since people insist that I do go cafe quite often, no harm typing this while waiting for nails to dry/moping over unemployed life/waiting for sun to set to run. So actually within 2015, I have went to the following cafes (hmm actually which of the following really constitute as a cafe huh)
  • Roycemary
  • Tian Kee and Co.
  • Hoopla
  • Cafe Melba
  • Boufe Cafe
  • Maccha House
  • Pitchstop (Does it really count as one???)
  • Coffee Nowhere (Now here, not no where haha)
  • Prive
  • Tiong Bahru Bakery
  • Montana Brew Bar
  • Carpenter &Cook
  • L'etoile Cafe
  • Holy Cow Creamery
  • Sunday Folks
  • SPRMKT
  • On The Table
Wow, didn't know the list is soooo looong haha. I mean, there are definitely people with a much longer list okaaaay. Haha so to prevent your waist line from going up and your wallet thickness from going down, here's my (very humble) opinion.

Among the list of cafes I went to this year, there's only a few that I would definitely head back. Hmm... so among all the cafes I have ever went to, here's what I really like.

Tiong Bahru Bakery

Tell me I am not the only one who likes their coffee!! I was supposed to meet my friends at another cafe- Montana's Brew Bar and I wanted to give their coffee a try BUT I happened to enter Tiong Bahru Bakery and I JUST CANNOT LEAVE THE PLACE WITHOUT THEIR COFFEE. I am no coffee connoisseur, I can't tell you how the beans were roasted etc... But I can tell how good the coffee smell and taste hahaha. So what would I choose between Starbucks and this?? HAHAHAHAHA it's an obvious answer.

And other than good coffee, everyone knows how awesome their croissants and kouign amann are. Buttery, fragrant and crispy, I am hungry NOW.

Lola's Cafe

I have been wanting to go back to Lola's Cafe for a longgg time. I honestly think they serve one of the best chicken wings (other than Four Fingers omnomnom). Honey Paprika Wings is definitely one of Lola's signature dishes. Other than the good chicken wings, I think the good service recovery may be the reason why I had such a good impression of them. Many cafes actually do offer good service (like RoyceMary- offers to take photos, gives suggestions about drinks etc) and I do think that for a cafe to do well, it not only needs to offer good food and ambiance BUT also impeccable service. HAHA good service recovery does remind me of MR lessons, hmmm but bye bookssss see you again if I ever do a Masters. Okay back to Lola's.

Hungry from looking at the chicken wings :'( But anyway, since I am not sponsored/paid, I can afford to be honest hehe. While their chicken wings, mains and dessert were average to good, their drinks were not very good. :( BUT I still want to go and try their scrambled eggs with croissant hehe. Okay, I must be really weird since Lola's Cafe is so out of the way for me and there's always a queue... They do have another shop called On The Table with similar food  BUT also inconvenient for me. Woes of living at where I lived hahaha.

Haha the issue of taking so long to update this post is that... I really went to On The Table and tried their croissant with scrambled eggs. This is good and really filling. I think two can share this dish and order their legendary, Honey Paprika Wings.

Oh and I tried their Affogato too! My first ever Affogato so I can't comment...

Prive Cafe

The ambiance at Prive Cafe is really good. Well, apparently stars can be spotted at Keppel Bay, how romantic rightttt, so if any guys come across this page, DON'T SAY I NEVER SHARE. Oh if one were to go there in the morning, it's still a good place to hang out. It's definitely very ootd worthy hahhaha.

Hmm, I usually prioritise the taste of food over the ambiance if I were to choose the dining location. I am not saying that the food at Prive was not good (it's really not bad) BUT the ambiance definitely contributed to the fact why I chose it as one of my favourite cafe hehe. Oh, I really want to give their brunch sets a try someday hehe.

Nice view (but irritating fan hahaha!)

Tsujiri Tea House

Having tried several matcha places in Singapore, I think Tsujiri offers the best tasting and most affordable matcha options (ice-cream and latte wise). Maccha House and Nana offer good matcha as well BUT the prices were like 10+ to around 20 dollars!! But the servings are much bigger as well. BUT desserts are not meant to be so huge right? Tsujiri's servings are just nice in my opinion. :) And having several outlets is a definite plus point :)

Red bean is definitely one of the best thing to go along with your matcha ice-cream hehe

Oh I did try Amasoy matcha ice-cream and I am a firm believer that matcha should be a little bit bitter instead of being just sweet. Amasoy icecream is a little too sweet and too icy in my opinion but if you like sweeter desserts, you can give it a try cause it's quite affordable.

What a long post hahaha. Sigh and I wonder why I don't have abs, now I guess I know why. Till the next time when I explore more foooooood.

Signing off,
a fat jane.

Last intensive mugging and an end to my school life. Well, there's a difference between school and learning. Here's some food photos from those days of mugging all the way till now.

Ivan's Carbina, Blk 354A Woodlands Ave 5.
One of the few (if not only) place(s) that you can find rosti at such a cheap price!

I have tried their chicken chop, grilled fish, chicken cutlet and rosti and I think that their best dish is definitely the rosti. Grilled fish was a little bland (I prefer my food to have less salt, so if I thought the food was bland hmm...), chicken cutlet was a little too oily...

So every time when I study at the library, I always love to eat the xiaowanmian, hokkien mee or the rosti from Ivan's Carbina and I really think I will miss the food hmm.

So other than visiting my usual food places, I have managed to check out Prive Cafe (finally). Being at Keppel Bay, the view was really nice (not that I have a lack of words to use but breathtaking can't be used here).

My nice view.

The ultimate fish & chips
I chose this because it's beer battered dory, not an alcoholic okay.
The last time I had beer battered fish was at MorganFields and I think the MorganFields' one was better hahaha.

Fried whole shrimp paste chicken
This contains onion fritters and Asian pickles which was basically like achar and I love achar cause
it's sour and spicy. And I love onions too. But I couldn't taste the shrimp paste. Hmm.

Hazelnut praline
Spend a long time deciding on desserts because there were too many options. I was thinking of trying their rich chocolate cake cause the Straits Times said it was perfect for chocolate lovers and it wasn't too sweet BUT I don't really see it at the display :( In the end, Hazelnut Praline was chosen because Ladyironchef said it was nice haha.

But then again, I have learnt to take online reviews with a pinch of salt. Because:
  1. Many of them are paid/sponsored
  2. People have different taste
Well, before I went to Prive, I heard that the service was bad and slow and one had to wait 30mins for food to arrive.. But when I was there, I really didn't experience any of that.

Oh and another worthy point to mention, I FINALLY WORN THIS DRESS OUT AGAIN YAAAAY.

So a few days after visiting Prive Cafe, I went to Department Of Caffeine with the MR groupmates. Hmm, maybe that's why people think I am forever at cafes...

Department of Caffeine
Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs

I have always wanted to try food from Department of Caffeine, namely their icecream waffles and their coffee. This time, I tried several of their mains like Lobster BLT roll and their New Colonel Chicken. Found them normal. Oh anw, I haven't had any good scrambled eggs in ages. Is it because Australian Dairy Co. had set a high standard or I have been visiting all the wrong places?? Hmm.

Sat there and chatted with the MR groupmates for a few hours. And we saw Ladyironchef when we arrived haha.

Another meet up with friends. Shopping at Bugis (yes there's where I get my cheap clothes) and having ramen. Was slightly hungry before dinner so I finally gave this crepe a try!

Ramen Keisuke Tonkotsu King Four Seasons
King's Ramen cause I thought King's will taste the best. Added the ramen egg for $2 because I loveee ramen eggs. Oops.

Company of the day

So on Friday, I went down all the way to Joo Koon and since I didn't want to waste my transport fees, I headed to Jurong Point and I finally tried Prata Wala!

Butter chicken and garlic naan

Roti Prata with chicken curry

Okay so if anyone reads all the way here, and you have the same question as everyone else...

Why do you always cafe-hop?

Here's my answer. First, I always thought cafehopping means you visit numerous cafes at one time HAHA, but okay, it doesn't seem like it okay...

Argh, I have no idea why people seem to think all I eat is from cafes. No, my favourite type of food is those home-made. Cause first, it's made with love. Secondly, it's healthier. Third, it's free (okay even if you pay for the ingredients and cook for yourself it's cheaper than eating outside).

So I infer that maybe people infer that I am always at cafes because I always take photos of food from cafes right. HAHA that's why people like to say social media is the side of their lives they choose to portray. Well, because those who know me better should know that I avoid scheduling appointments at night because I LOVE HOME-COOKED DINNERS. Double boiled soups, sweet and sour pork ribs, mee hoon kway, thunder tea rice, steamed fish... ALL MY FAVOURITE HOME-COOKED DISHES.

Okay, back to the point why I always take photos of cafe food. Hmm to that I will say, first, food from cafes always look good cause of all the effort in plating etc (hey customers pay for it right) hence it warrants a photo right? Next, I don't like to instagram photos of food that I eat regularly like yongtaufoo at hawker centre? And one don't instagram home-cooked food because you are with your parents right?

Okay I sound a little too defensive...

And I agree cafes are always very expensive *heartpain*. But everyone has different spending habits right? Some love to spend on fashion while I just like to spend on food. I proudly announce that in my wardrobe, most of my clothes are $10-$15 (dresses/skirts/shorts), $20++ for outerwear (except blazer) and the most expensive item is probably like my prom dress. And I don't buy clothes just cause there's blogshop sales... So perhaps that's where my money is from?

And I hope that answers that question hahaha.

Some picture updates (of food duh) while I am fighting with my monthly battle of cramps yet again. Can't do any work while dealing with all these cramps, so why not while my time away at my (very old) blog hahahaha.

W39's Egg Benedict
Model not included (HAHA)

W39
Yet another item on the brunch menu.

Love the design of the place and the fact that they have outdoor seatings means there's dogs hehehe.

Finally tried Tiong Bahru Bakery, love their pastry ^^

Honey Creme, definitely not worth the money and hype.
The soft serve does taste better than McDonalds BUT honey comb is disgusting.

ALIVE Museum ^^

Checking out Royce Mary cafe at Sembawang,
woohoo Sembawang can have a cafe now!

Lovely company

Tian Kee & Co's breakfast, not very nice.

Tian Kee & Co.'s pretty rainbow cake,

Catching up.

Yet another breakfast set

Polaroids outside Boufe Cafe,
nice place with really value for money food and good service :)
(Pardon my weird looking thumb)

You Huak Restaurant
Despite living in the North for my entire life, this is my first time trying this. Love the beehoon and the ngoh hiang ^^

Okay so basically all the photos were from December till like April???

Well, time flies. I am now a final year student, convocating on 3rd August (hey guys, this is a hint thanks for the flowers/balloons/food #kidding #ormaybenot HAHAHA)

Shall go and do bimbo stuff like paint nails and do some reading :)

Like how a few weeks ago I was just thinking about democracy and HK and yesterday I was thinking about Section 377A. Hmm.
